In our latest podcast, we explore the global decline in fertility rates and the aging population, delving into their profound implications for economic growth, inflation, expected returns, and asset allocation.
The Global Total Fertility Rate (TFR) has dropped significantly over the past 70 years—from approximately five children per woman in 1950 to just 2.2 in 2021. Alarmingly, more than half of all countries and territories (110 out of 204) now fall below the population replacement level of 2.1 births per woman (source: healthdata.org). We therefore discuss the implications of the declining TFR on global economies and societies, and highlight the investment opportunities we foresee would be worth looking into.

Ahead of the kick-off for the football Euros, Julian Wheeler, our in-house US Equity Specialist creates his US ‘Soccer’ Team of stocks which, with allowance for a few subs and formation changes, could go all the way to qualify for the World Cup in 2026. In keeping with the analogy, this team naturally contains ‘attackers’ and ‘defenders’ that loosely equate to high growth/ risk as the forwards who should score goals, combined with companies that hopefully offer some stability and prevent you conceding too many losses at the other end.
In this special episode, the hosts, Neil Williams and Stewart Abrahart take a fun and creative approach by discussing Julian Wheeler’s fantasy football team composed of US stocks. Julian Wheeler discusses the strategy behind selecting the stocks as players in a 4-3-3 formation.
